La Fortuna, a small town in northern Costa Rica, sits in the shadow of the iconic Arenal Volcano, once the country’s most active and still one of its most visually striking. The town’s name, which means “The Fortune,” is no coincidence; it was spared when Arenal erupted unexpectedly in 1968, reshaping the landscape and eventually drawing visitors from around the world. Today, La Fortuna is known for its lush rainforest, geothermal activity, and stunning scenery that feels both wild and welcoming.
Adventure is woven into the daily life of La Fortuna. From hiking the lava trails at Arenal Volcano National Park to ziplining over rainforest canopies or rappelling down waterfalls, visitors can easily spend days outdoors. The La Fortuna Waterfall is another standout, plunging over 70 meters into a clear, cool pool that’s open for swimming. Those who prefer a slower pace can explore hanging bridges through the forest or take a boat safari on the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, a lesser-known gem where sloths, toucans, and caimans are frequently spotted.
What many don't expect is the relaxing side of La Fortuna. The area's underground volcanic activity feeds a network of hot springs, some rustic and river-fed, with others part of full-service resorts like Tabacón or EcoTermales. Soaking in these mineral-rich waters beneath a canopy of trees is an experience unique to this part of Costa Rica. It’s not uncommon to see toucans flying overhead while you’re unwinding in the warm pools.
